Madhur Bhandarkar to make a film on Fashion industry

After exposing the life of the elite and the manipulations of the business world in Page 3 and Corporate respectively, filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar is ready to take on the fashion industry.

Over the years, Bhandarkar has developed his own unique genre of films that hold mirror to different sections of the society, be it the world of bar dancers, or celebrities or business executives. He is presently making Traffic Signal which will expose the life of a common man on the streets of Mumbai.

Even though the movie has yet to hit the theatres, Madhur has tied up with production house UTV for another film intended to bring to light the harsh realities of the fashion world beyond its glitz and glamour.

The film is tentatively titled Fashion .

As is the case with Bhandarkar’s films, this movie too will feature some real people from the world of Indian fashion industry. Ace fashion designer Rohit Bal will do the styling of the characters in the film.

Bhandarkar says the film will expose the lesser-known truths about the fashion world – the sexual exploitation, the casting couches, the politics, the fierce competition and the superficiality that lies beneath the razzle-dazzle on the ramp.

Announcing the project on Wednesday in Mumbai, Bhandarkar told reporters: “What lies beneath the airbrushed, picture-perfect surface is often a cut-throat world of forgotten morals and flawed ethics. 'Fashion' is an attempt to hold a mirror to both the dazzling beauty and the harsh darkness of this world.”

Bhandarkar is currently in the process of developing the concept and screenplay of the movie with UTV. The script is being written by Ajay Monga and Rohini Sharma. Its star cast is still not finalized.

However, the maverick filmmaker has already begun doing research on the subject. He attended the recently concluded Wills India Fashion Week in Delhi where he carefully observed the functioning of a fashion show from the greenrooms to ramps.

Bhandarkar is looking forward to shoot 'Fashion' early next year. The movie is likely to hit the theatres in the third quarter of 2007.
