Over five titles from veteran and first-time Indian filmmakers will see their world premiere at the 31st Toronto International Film Festival.

The ten-day annual film festival, which kicked off on September 7, covers themes from friends and family, to politics and war. It is touted as an Oscar preview for many Hollywood films.

The Indian films to be shown at the festival include Karan Johar's Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna , Kabir Khan's Kabul Express , Chitra Palekar's 'Grave-Keeper's Tale', Rajnesh Domalpalli's 'Vanaja' and Haobam Paban Kumar's 'Cry in the Dark.'

Amitabh Bachchan , Shah Rukh Khan , Rani Mukherjee and Ayesha Dharkar are expected to attend the festival on Sunday at a special watching of 'KANK'. The stars will join director Karan Johar at a seminar on the making of a Bollywood blockbuster, conducted by Suketu Mehta, author of the award-winning book, 'Maximum City.'

Kabir Khan's 'Kabul Express' is also generating a lot of buzz at the festival. It deals with the aftermath of the Afghan war from the perspective of three journalists who forged dubious friendship with Taliban fighters. Filmed in 2005, it was the first international film to be made in Afghanistan after the Taliban were forced out of power.

Another Indian film 'A Cry in the Dark,' is a documentary about public protests against the death of a girl in police custody after she was raped.

Last year Deepa Mehta's Water was a hit at the festival. It was released in America five months after the Toronto debut and had a very successful run across Canada.

"India, a nation of different cultures and languages, makes its cinema diverse, dynamic and exciting," Noah Cowan, Festival Co-Director said, adding, "Films in Hindi, Marathi, Telugu and Manipuri will be shown at the festival, along with several major world premieres from talented new filmmakers."

"The Indian films demonstrate the impressive range of Indian cinema, and we at the Festival are thrilled to be a part of its future," he said.

Heavyweights from Hollywood, European and Indian cinema are attending the annual event where 352 movies will shown nearly round the clock for ten days, organizers said today.

The guest list tops 500 and runs from India's Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan to the Chinese silver screen goddess Zhang Ziyi, as well as Hollywood's Brad Pitt, France's Daniel Auteuil and Spain's Pedro Almodovar.
