Mira Nair’s much-awaited movie The Namesake will open the sixth annual Indo-American Arts Council Film Festival in New York in November.
The film is a screen adaptation of Pulitzer prize-winning writer Jhumpa Lahiri's book of the same title. Its story straddles across two culturally different cities – New York and Kolkata – over a period of thirty years.
Starring Tabu , Irrfan Khan , Kal Penn, Jacinda Barrett and Zuleikha Robinson in key roles, ‘The Namesake’ is ready for its theatrical release by Fox Searchlight Pictures on Nov 3.
However, before its global release, the film will kick-start the Indo-American Arts Council Film Festival on Nov 1.
Nair described her movie in a press release: “This film is a piece of my heart - a seesaw of two great cities of the world - NY and Kolkata.”
The film tells the tale of a Bengali family in the US. It is about the clash of traditional Indian values with the modern consumerist ethos of the US. The film tackles the universal theme of love and loss within a family.
