Zindagi RocksZindaggi Rocks : Movie Review

At the concept level, Zindagi Rocks is indeed a story to reckon with. But translated on the big screen, it turns out to be a wishy-washy film that fails to strike the right chord.

A mother makes an ultimate sacrifice to save the life of her ailing son. The story has a potential to stir emotions and to provoke thoughts. But 'Zindaggi Rocks' fails to do either.

Tanuja Chandra's writing and direction lack the strength and boldness that the story demanded. Sushmita Sen brings the requisite intensity in her character, but other actors merely end up hamming. And the movie turns out to be just an audio-visual thing without ever gripping a viewer.

The film is the story of a singer, rock star Kria (Sushmita Sen) who has an adopted, 12-year-old son Dhruv. Kria has a stern mother and a fun-loving mausi (both roles played by Moushmi Chatterjee).

Shiney Ahuja plays Suraj Rihan, a serious, reticent, no-nonsense doctor.

Kria meets Suraj in a hospital. Sensing dullness in the doc's life, Kria, true to her happy-go-lucky nature, asks him out on a date. The good-natured charm of Kria is hard to ignore and so the doctor is eventually drawn towards her.

Soon there is an admission of love from Kria's side. Dr. Rihan too reciprocates her feelings.

But not all is hunky-dory. Suraj already has a wife who is leading a vegetable existence. By the time the film approaches the interval point, the story takes a sudden turn when Kria's adopted son Dhruv is diagnosed with a hole in heart.

A transplant operation is needed to save the young child's life, but the problem is to find a donor. While Suraj makes his attempts to find a donor, Kria decides to make the ultimate sacrifice to save her son's life.

'Zindaggi Rocks' is like an opportunity lost. The movie has the scope for heart-wrenching drama and tear-jerking moments. But alas, the script fails to lay the right foundation for the story to develop on. The emotional bonding between Sushmita and her son appears more textbook than real. With the exception of Kria, no other character has any depth or layers. The stern mother and the caricaturized mausi are plain cardboard characters.

Only Sushmita Sen makes the movie watchable to some extent. In her act as a singer who loves to spread happiness and live life to its fullest, she is both feisty and fiery. Shiney Ahuja does a decent job but doesn't deliver anything stellar. Moushmi Chatterjee is irritating in her overblown act. Kim Sharma is passable in her extended special appearance.

In a nutshell, 'Zindaggi Rocks' is a let down. Far from rocking, the movie doesn't even stir or shake you. The final moments of the film does bring a tear to the eye. But by then it is too late and the ship has already sunk.
