It is one of India's enduring tales, and with each new telling, the story of Umrao Jaan, who as the eight-year-old Amiran is kidnapped in revenge, but goes on to become a famous courtesan, only seems to find newer dimensions to fascinate the audience. 
Over two decades ago (1981) when Rekha donned the role of Umrao Jaan, it generated plenty of debate over her 'suitability' for the role. She of course, went on to sweep the filmgoers with a scintillating performance. This year's remake (at a cost of Rs 20 crore) has Ash playing the exotic courtesan, whose costumes are likely to be lapped up by everyone who parties, attends society weddings and those who simply want to look exotic. The film is plush with designer wear and exotic jewellery, and not merely Umrao Jaan's, but also that of the Nawab Sultan, played by Abhishek Bachchan . The story follows the life of the abducted Amiran, as Umrao Jaan was originally called, at the Luknowi kotha. Being a home of harmony and a seat of fine arts, besides a cultural hub, Amiran emerges as a talented singer, dancer and a poet, earning for herself the sobriquet Umrao Jaan. Her ravishing beauty and soul stirring songs enchants everyone, and she herself falls in love with the Nawab Sultan. A far journey for Amiran from Faizabad who had been born into a lower middle class family. Now all she wants of life is a husband whom she loves, a family and a home. Will she get it all? Releasing on November 3, 2006, the film by J.P. Dutta is tipped to be one of the landmarks in Bollywood. (The picture shows Ash in a still from the film).
