Not just that, more than Hollywood, it is Bollywood that has left an indelible imprint on Guyana. Songs from Hindi movies seem to be more popular in Guyana and locals flaunt CDs of Bollywood hits with a sense of pride.
There are half a dozen cinema halls in Guyana and there are occasions when majority of them show Hindi films, perhaps the reason could be that about 44 per cent of the 3.27 lakh population are ethnic Indians.
No wonder, films like ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’ (in picture) have turned out to be big crowd pullers.
With the older generation yielding place to new, the taste of the youth too is changing. Young boys and girls like to see films starring Preity Zinta and Kajol while older movie buffs enjoy movies whose cast comprises Dharmendra or Amitabh Bachchan . Even Mithun Chakraborty used to be quite popular once upon a time.
Like Bollywood, Indian music too has caught the fancy of the local people, a new type of what is known as 'chutney music' is gradually becoming very popular in the country which has a population comprising 43.5 percent East Indian.
‘Chutney music’ is an up-tempo, rhythmic song, accompanied by the dholak, the harmonium and the dhantal.
