Certain unfortunate happenings in life can test people’s integrity. Should one resign to one’s fate, or should one look forward to a better future, even if it means going against the set traditions? B R Film’s Babul is the story of a father-in-law who dares to go against tradition for a better future for his widowed daughter-in-law.

Nearly three years after the touching family drama Baghban , director Ravi Chopra returns with the same team of Amitabh Bachchan , Hema Malini and Salman Khan in ‘Babul’. This time the star ensemble has only gotten bigger with Rani Mukherjee , John Abraham and Om Puri in the cast.

The basic premise of the story of ‘Babul’ is that human happiness is above traditions. One should respect tradition, but one should not shut door to life because of it.

Amitabh Bachchan as Balraj Kapoor
Despite his domineering presence, Balraj Kapoor is humility personified. He is a loving husband, a friendly father and an ideal father-in-law. For him nothing is above the true happiness of heart.

Hema Malini as Shobhna Kapoor
Shobhna is the better half of Balraj Kapoor. Though she may snub her husband and son at times, her heart is full of love for them both.

Salman Khan as Avinash Kapoor
Avinash is a bundle of energy. The only son of Balraj and Shobhna, he is buoyant, vivacious and love-struck. He persists at winning the love of the woman he desires, and he succeeds also.

Rani Mukherjee as Malvika Talwar
Beautiful Malvika has a penchant for painting. She has a very clean heart that makes clear distinction between love and friendship. And when she loves, she commits for her lifetime.

John Abraham as Rajat
Rajat is a close friend of Malvika. Like her, he also has interest in arts. His passion is for music. And his love is only expressed through his songs.

Om Puri as Balwant Kapoor
Balwant Kapoor is the patriarchal head of the Kapoor family. He is a man of orthodox mindset and holds traditions and family honour above everything.

THE STORY

The family of Balraj Kapoor (Amitabh) is picture perfect. He is a rich businessman with a loving wife Shobhna (Hema Malini) and a charming son Avinash (Salman).

There is no limit to the joy of the two parents when Avinash returns home after completing his studies abroad.

Avinash meets his match in Milli (Rani Mukherjee) who is a painter. In just a few meetings they fall in love and later get married.

Milli’s best friend Rajat (John Abraham) is a musician. He has always harbored romantic feeling for her but never expressed them verbally. Although it breaks his heart to see the woman he loves married to Avinash, he is glad just to see her happy. After Milli’s marriage, Rajat goes to Europe and settles there.

In due course, Avinash and Milli are blessed with a child named Ansh. But a big tragedy is waiting to happen.

The world of the Kapoors comes crashing down when Avinash is killed in an accident. In a single stroke of fate, Milli’s life is ruined forever.

It pains Balraj Kapoor to see Milli living a bland, lifeless existence. To fill the void in her heart left by Avinash’s death, he asks Rajat to come into her life again and marry her.

But this decision of Balraj meets a strong opposition from his elder brother Balwant (Om Puri). Even Shobhna does not approve of it.

Will Balraj be able to bring back happiness in Milli’s colourless life? Will Milli marry again?

‘Babul’ promises an emotionally moving cinematic experience that will appeal to family audiences and married couples alike.

The film is directed by Ravi Chopra. It has music by Aadesh Shrivastva. Moreover, Amitabh Bachchan has himself sung a couple of songs in the film.

‘Babul’ is slated to release on December 8.
