Shilpa Shetty not new to controversies

Shilpa Shetty , who has revived her sagging Bollywood career with her win on ‘Celebrity Big Brother’, is not new to controversies like the race row that erupted during her appearance on the British reality TV show.

From playing Seema Malhotra who gets thrown off the terrace of a highrise by Shah Rukh Khan in ‘Baazigar’ 14 years ago, Shilpa – one of Bollywood's tallest actresses who is fondly known as ‘Silly Pooh’ – has grown taller in stature by winning the controversial reality show.

But Shilpa has been in trouble even before for her "blow-ups" which allegedly violated the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act. Her name was also dragged into an alleged extortion case wherein her father Surendra Shetty had to seek anticipatory bail three years ago.

Through it all, Shilpa learnt to show ‘grace under pressure’. When a case was slapped on her and Reema Sen after their alleged ‘obscene pictures’ were published in a Tamil paper, she bravely retorted: "If showing the navel is obscene then the sari should be banned."

Similarly, when Pankaj Aggarwal, the owner of Prafful Sarees who signed Shilpa in 1998 for a contract worth Rs 4 lakh a year, submitted tapes to police in Surat in which he was threatened by criminals allegedly hired by her parents to recover arrears, the actress said "the tapes were doctored".

Most of her colleagues in Bollywood are happy that she won on ‘Celebrity Big Brother’.

Director Mahesh Bhatt said, "I feel good that Shilpa has emerged the winner of the TV show. It adds to her brand value. But the importance (of winning the show) will be confined to that point as it hasn't tested her acting calibre."

Shilpa's acting skills have not gone unnoticed in Bollywood. She bagged the Filmfare award for best debut in ‘Baazigar’.

Though Shilpa never made it to the top league, she did get a couple of good roles like the part of a HIV-positive woman in Phir Milenge which got her a Filmfare Best Actress award.

Asked if Shilpa would have shot to fame and won the mega bucks without the row over racist bullying on the show, Pooja Bedi was diplomatic. "Let's not get into that. The important thing is she has won. And I am happy for her."

Shilpa, who starred in just one film in 2006 - Shaadi Karke Phas Gaya Yaar – is now awaiting the release of Metro , ‘Forever’, ‘Happy Birthday’ and ‘Durbar’, all of which are in various stages of production.

With endorsements and film offers pouring in from all corners and Shilpa's career finally set to take off, the actress will have to perhaps postpone her plans to settle down in the next three years.
