Sugar-free romance and Shootout this Friday

Two films starring Amitabh Bachchan will be hitting the theatres this Friday.

But it won’t be an overdose of Big B for the movie buffs because both films belong to very different genres. While ‘Cheeni Kum’ is a breezy, light-hearted, romantic entertainer, ‘Shootout At Lokhandwala’ is a gritty thriller based on a real life incident.

Cheeni Kum is second consecutive movie to feature Amitabh Bachchan in a romantic role with a young co-star. But unlike Ram Gopal Varma’s Nishabd , ‘Cheeni Kum’ is not a serious and intense story. It is a comedy about a 64-year-old man who falls for a 34-yr-old unmarried woman. Big B and Tabu play the respective roles.

The film has Bachchan playing a rough-talking chef of a restaurant in London. Tabu plays one of the customers who raises an objection to a dish at the restaurant. Their first meeting ends with an altercation. But love blossoms gradually between them over a period of time. Now the real challenge for them is to convince Tabu’s father, played by Paresh Rawal , to accept a 64-yr-old man as his daughter’s suitor.

‘Cheeni Kum’ is the first feature film by R Balakrishnan who has previously made ad films with Big B.

Another big release of this Friday would be Sanjay Gupta’s Shootout At Lokhandwala . The film, directed by Apoorva Lakhia , has a very impressive cast ensemble consisting of Sanjay Dutt , Amitabh Bachchan, Vivek Oberoi , Tusshar Kapoor , Arbaaz Khan , Sunil Shetty , Rohit Roy , Dia Mirza , Amrita Singh and Abhishek Bachchan (in a brief role).

The film is based on the 1991 real life encounter between gangsters and cops in Mumbai’s Lokhandwala complex. Vivek and Tusshar play the roles of Maya Dolas and Dilip Buva, the henchmen of Dawood Ibrahim.

On a summer day in 1991, Maya, Dilip and three other gangsters were surrounded by cops in a flat in Lokhandwala. Sanjay Dutt plays ACP Aftab Ahmed Khan who leads the encounter in which the entire Mumbai suburb was transformed into a war zone. Amitabh Bachchan plays a lawyer in the film.

Both Amitabh and Abhishek did not charge any money for acting in this film. They did it for free for Sanjay Dutt who is the co-producer of the film.

Sanjay Gupta feels the clash of two Big B films will not affect their box-office performance because they are based on entirely different themes.

However, an ample dose of Big B is promised in both the films.

Fridays like these are rare.
