How much money is riding on Sanjay Dutt?

The Hindi film industry has definitely received a jolt with the sentencing of 6-year imprisonment to actor Sanjay Dutt .

Dutt was sentenced on Tuesday for illegal possession of arms. His plea to be released on bail to allow him some days to surrender was rejected by the court, thereby sending Dutt directly to Arthur Road jail.

With his imprisonment many projects in Bollywood would suffer while others may never be made. According to trade analyst Komal Nahata, as much as Rs 50 crore is riding on Dutt.

Presently, Dutt has been shooting for three films – Sanjay Gupta’s Alibag , Abbas-Mastan’s Mr. Fraud and a thriller titled Kidnap . It goes without saying that Dutt will no longer be able to shoot these films, thereby leaving their fate in limbo. The only option for the directors of these films is to make innovative changes in the film’s script and exclude Dutt’s presence from the film.

One project that will suffer the most is the third movie of the Munnabhai series: Munnabhai Chale Amerika . Even though the film’s shooting hasn’t begun yet, the film’s producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra had its promos shot and released in theatres along with his movie ‘Eklavya’ early this year.

Now, with Dutt going to prison for more than four years (after deducting the time he has already served), there is a strong chance that ‘Munnabhai Chale Amerika’ may never be made.

Dutt was also supposed to act in Sanjay Gupta’s Dus Kahaniyan . But the project will not suffer much because Dutt was part of only one or two of the short stories in the film.

Sanjay Dutt’s next release will be Indra Kumar’s comedy movie Dhamaal for which he gave bulk dates to complete its shooting just in time before his verdict. The film is currently in post-production stages and will release in the coming months.
