Bollywood reacts to the Sanjay Dutt verdict

Most film personalities believe that the six-year prison sentence given to Sanjay Dutt in 1993 Mumbai blasts case is “harsh”.

In 1994, when Sanju was arrested for the first time in this case, he was almost abandoned by his friends in the film industry.

But this time, when he has been given 6-year prison term, the film fraternity is rallying behind Dutt.

Kiron Kher , noted actress, told a news channel: “I am heartbroken. I respect the judiciary but what about all the powerful people who have committed crimes and are walking free and they are even in the parliament. His (Sanjay Dutt’s) behaviour has been exemplary.”

Mahima Chaudhary believed the verdict was harsh. She told the channel: “I think the six-year sentence is very harsh, with due respect to judiciary.”

Veteran actress Saira Banu, wife of Dilip Kumar , voiced a similar sentiment. She told a news agency: “I think whatever punishment has been meted out to him (Sanjay), it far exceeds the error committed by him...People have forgotten the circumstances under which the error was committed.”

Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt , who directed Dutt in several movies, said: “It is certainly a dark day for people who know Sanju. It is like a replay of events.”

Rakhi Sawant , however, had a different point of view. She told a Hindi news channel: “I think if judiciary has decided something, it is right and ought to be respected. Everyone is one before law.”

Director Anubhav Sinha , who directed Dutt in Dus , told a website: “It feels terrible. I feel bad for a friend, an actor, a star…As a friend, I would feel the judgment is harsh.”
