'No Smoking' defies convention

Trust director Anurag Kashyap to not care a hoot for convention. He is a filmmaker who truly thinks out of the box.

Kashyap’s latest movie No Smoking appears as unconventional as can be. In the words of its lead actor John Abraham , the film will create a genre of its own. Just a mere lowdown of the film’s story reveals how unconventional ‘No Smoking’ is.

The film tells the story of a chain smoker who can suffer horrible consequences if he disobeys his vow to not smoke. His fingers can be chopped off, his car can blow into smithereens, his beloved can leave him, or he may even end up losing his life.

The germ of this story came from an episode from Ram Gopal Varma’s movie Darna Mana Hai . While Ramu was sure the story suited a short film format, Anurag Kashyap was adamant to make a full-length feature film out of it.

Kashyap wrote the story, roped in John to play the lead and got the backing of producers Kumar Mangat and Vishal Bharadwaj .

But while making the film, Kashyap did not follow the script exactly. He allowed improvisations. And thereby he ended up making a very unusual movie.

Have you ever seen a song sung by a male singer picturised on a female?

‘No Smoking’ has it.

Have you ever seen grown-up actors playing adolescents?

‘No Smoking’ has that too.

If this is not enough, ‘No Smoking’ has the same actress playing two different, unrelated roles.

Yes, ‘No Smoking’ has Ayesha Takia playing two distinct and unrelated characters (John’s wife and secretary). The film has model Jesse Randhawa lip-syncing a song sung by Adnan Sami . And it has a sequence in which both John Abraham and Ranvir Shorey are shown as adolescents without the help of child artistes or special effects.

Such are the oddities in ‘No Smoking’.

So if you are a sucker for unconventional films, you won’t have difficulty in deciding which film to watch this Friday – ‘No Smoking’ or Jab We Met .
