Director Vivek Agnihotri was inspired by a real life incident to make his film ‘Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal’.

That real life incident was the ill-fated plane crash more than 40 years ago in which eight players of football club Manchester United lost their lives. The manager of the team Matt Busby, himself injured, was shattered by the loss of lives, but he started another team from scratch and within a decade went on to re-create a superb team that won major tournaments in Europe.

Agnihotri says the basic germ of Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal (don’t miss the film’s slideshow) comes from this tragedy.

“My film is not about the tragedy per se. The tragedy is a potent story in itself. It (the film) is about a team that is completely finished, a wash out and how they rise from the ashes to win the next big match,” Agnihotri is quoted by Bombay Times.

However, ‘Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal’ is not about Manchester United players. Rather, it is a story of ragtag team of players from British Asian community. The club in crisis in the film is Southall United.

Arshad Warsi plays the captain of the team. Boman Irani plays the coach who takes the job of creating a team that could ensure the survival of Southall United. John Abraham plays an ace footballer who is unjustly dropped from English team because of the color of his skin. He joins Southall United.

How this team of underdogs takes on some of the biggest teams in Europe is what the story of ‘Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal’ is about. The movie also tackles the issue of racism against Asians in Britain.

The film stars Bipasha Basu as a physiotherapist. It is set to release on November 23.
