Om Shanti Om or Saawariya : Which one to watch?

Both the films have their own strong points to draw the crowds to the theatres.

Thank God it’s Friday. Well almost. And the biggest Bollywood clash of the year is just hours away. Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om fights it out with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya this Diwali weekend.

An average viewer who must have been perplexed by the hype about both the films may not have difficulty in deciding if he knows what he wants. Here we present cases for both the films.

OM SHANTI OM – TO DRIVE YOUR BLUES AWAY

If you want to watch a wholesome entertainer stuffed with fun, masti, drama, romance and action, then OSO is the film for you. Trust Farah Khan to give you entertainment worth your time and money. OSO, yet again, has Farah’s wacky tribute to the 70s.

It is a love story set in the film industry. Shah Rukh Khan plays a junior artist who falls in love with a big star, played by Deepika Padukone . But the love story remains incomplete and the hero dies. Thirty years later the reincarnated self of SRK – with six packs et al – completes the love story.

SAAWARIYA – POETRY ON CELLULOID

Sanjay Leela Bhansali , one of the finest filmmakers in India, comes up with his fifth film ‘Saawariya’ this Friday. Just a mere look at the promos is enough to captivate you. Hues of green and blue dominate the frames as the camera captures the hazy ambience of a town that seems out of this world. Against this backdrop is set a love story of two young hearts – a Hindu boy and a Muslim girl. One chance encounter between the two is enough to kindle the spark of love. But it would be a love story full of pain.

‘Saawariya’ introduces two newcomers Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor . Salman Khan and Rani Mukherjee have brief roles. The film is said to be inspired from Fyodor Dostoevsky’s short story ‘White Nights’, but Bhansali has not confirmed this.

Admitted, the choice between OSO and ‘Saawariya’ is not an easy one. OSO may have the upper hand because it has SRK in the lead role, a gorgeous debutante, and the feelgood factor of the festive season in its favour. ‘Saawariya’, on the other hand, tugs at your heart with its touching story.
