Madhuri DixitAn ode to Madhuri Dixit : Why she remains unmatched
28th Nov 2007  22.10 IST
By Naresh K. D.

Such a harmonious blend of beauty and talent hasn’t been seen since the days of Madhubala.

I remember I was a mere teenager, a young and impressionable mind, when I first saw Madhuri Dixit on the big screen in the late eighties. I had heard about her from some inconsequential films with corny titles like “Khatron Ke Khiladi”, but had not seen her till the day I walked into a theatre screening ‘Dayavan’.

Though it was men who dominated the frames of the movie, Madhuri still left an indelible impression on me before her character got bumped off mid-way through the course of the story. There was something about her face, about her eyes and about her sparkling smile that had won me over. Not to mention the passionate kiss for which I went to see the film again.

Back then, Madhuri mania had just begun to take off. Soon, it reached a step higher with Tezaab , as she gyrated to “Ek Do Teen…” and made countless fans, some of who, no doubt, envied Anil Kapoor for having found such a stunning co-star. The Madhuri-Anil magic was to be recreated in half a dozen more films and the gossipmongers left hardly a few stones unturned to link-up the two stars, both of who remained unfazed and unruffled by the loose talk.

Over the course of subsequent years, Madhuri did many films – some good, some bad – with a number of co-stars, but nothing came close to her most memorable movie Hum Aapke Hain Kaun , in which she paired with the then pin-up boy of Bollywood, Salman Khan . It was a film that made Madhuri a household name. It also brought green lehenga suddenly in vogue at marriage parties where giggly girls would try to imitate Madhuri from the song “Didi Tera Dewar Deewana”. Not just girls, even an artist like M F Hussain went fida over Madhuri after watching the film and proclaimed her his ‘muse’ and went on to paint several canvases of her portraits and even made a film called Gajagamini exclusively for her. The Madhuri mania had hit the crescendo.

Five years ago, a bolt of lightening struck the Hindi film industry when Madhuri announced her plans to marry and retire from films. Not that we were not happy about the new chapter in her life. We were just sad about the old one that she was closing.

But that was back then. Coming back to the future, or rather into the present, the wait of five years has been long but worth going through. Today, as Madhuri makes a comeback in a movie that Aditya Chopra wrote exclusively for her, life appears to have come full circle for this diva.

In her heydays, Madhuri had harbored a desire to work with cinematographer Anil Mehta someday. Little did she know that one day she would be the leading lady of the lensman’s directorial debut!

In a strange way, as Aaja Nachle nears its release on Friday and as Madhuri gets busy making appearances on television and giving promotional interviews, it seems that she had never left us. That her unmatched beauty and talent has not receded an iota since she dazzled us all in her last film Devdaas in 2002.

Time has flown by. And ‘Aaja Nachle’, her comeback movie, appears like an invitation to her fans to join the joie de vivre of life. Well, M F Hussain has already taken a head start and booked an entire theatre for himself.
