Sudhir Mishra's latest film Khoya Khoya Chand is a throwback to the cinema of 1950s. The movie tells a heart-rending tale of romance between an actress and a writer.

The man who made 'Hazaron Khwaishein Aisi' is back with another film. This time Sudhir Mishra takes us back to what he calls "the golden age of Indian cinema" when movies were made by artists and not businessmen.

Against the backdrop of the film industry of 1950s, 'Khoya Khoya Chand' narrates a tumultuous love story of two young people, played by Shiney Ahuja and Soha Ali Khan .

Soha plays Nikhat, an 18-year-old beginner in the film industry in 1950s. She falls under the influence of a successful actor Prem ( Rajat Kapoor ) who gives her big breaks and uses her in turn. Shiney plays Zaffer, a writer-director who frees Nikhat from the stranglehold of Prem and unwittingly begins to use her like Prem did. The film is a story of two lovers who cannot live with or without each other. It also stars Sonya Jehan , Vinay Pathak and Sourabh Shukla.

From the first glance only, it is evident that the film's story is inspired from the life of legendary Guru Dutt, whom Mishra adores as a filmmaker.

Mishra says the toughest part about the film was to recreate the era of 50s on the celluloid. The director had to work in close coordination with art director Gautam Sen, costume designer Niharika Khan and cameraman Sachin to make sure that the look of the 50s was created authentically.

And the actors too had to do a lot of preparation for their roles. Shiney and Soha had to learn Urdu language thoroughly before shooting the film. The two also saw films from 1950s era. Soha, in addition, had to learn horse riding for a sequence. There are other sequences in the film that show her doing cabaret and classical dance. Soha gave three months to fully prepare for her role.

Mishra says he was adamant on having Soha, and Soha only, for the leading role in the film "because her face has an old-world charm."

The director also calls 'KKC' his toughest film till date.

The movie hits the theatres on Friday.
