The man who conceptualized 'Taare Zameen Par'

Amol Gupte has worked with children of different abilities for many years and he put together his experience while writing the script of Taare Zameen Par .

It was supposed to be his directorial debut until creative differences emerged between Amol and Aamir Khan , the producer and leading actor of the film, who eventually took over the directorial baton from Amol. But Amol is not indulging in mud slinging. He just wants ‘Taare Zameen Par’ to get appreciation from the audiences.

A part-time painter and a theatre artist, Amol says he began working on the film’s story many years ago. He worked and reworked on the script to make it more and more easy to direct. It was about five years ago that Amol met Aamir and asked the actor to produce his film on children. Aamir expressed interest but could not begin the film because of ups and downs in his personal life. It was last year, in 2006, that Aamir and Amol decided to make it into a film.

Happy to find the break that he was looking for, Amol says he began working on all aspects of pre-production work for the film. He auditioned thousands of boys before finding Darsheel Safary from Shiamak Davar’s Summer Funk group.

With everything in place, the shooting began, but after a week creative differences emerged between Aamir and Amol.

“Aamir wasn’t too happy about the way the film was being made. So I decided to step aside and offered that he take over,” says Amol, who was subsequently given the task of ‘creative director’ on the sets.

Amol’s inputs and suggestions were always called for by Aamir, but it was the latter who was in command on the sets.

Despite all that happened Amol apparently harbours no grudge towards Aamir.

“Taare Zameen Par is my baby. When it releases, I want people to see the film for what it is and not just as Aamir Khan’s directorial debut. Aamir has been gracious in giving me the due credit and I am happy the way the film has shaped up.”

Now, Amol is planning to make another children’s film. This time he is looking forward to produce and direct it himself.
