Never before was so much young blood pumped into the tinsel town as in year 2008.In a nation where majority of its billion-plus population lies within the age bracket of 15-35, it was but obvious that this “demographic dividend” would show in the film industry as well. And it did show in the year 2008, which can be dubbed as the year of new kids on the B-block. More than a dozen newcomers stepped into Bollywood this year. It’s another matter that only a few of them have managed to get a firm foothold so far. 
The most promising newcomer of the year has been Imran Khan , who struck gold in his very debut film Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na and transformed himself from a lean and lanky guy-next-door to a mean and manipulative kidnapper in his second outing in Sanjay Gadhvi’s Kidnap . Though the film failed at the box office, Imran made a firm place in the hearts of his admirers. Harman Baweja began his Bollywood innings on the same day as Imran, but failed to draw audiences to the theatres and his debut film Love Story 2050 , a sci-fi thriller, sank at the marquee within weeks of its release. Among females, the most noticeable debutante has been Anushka Sharma , a Bangalorean beauty who gets to share the screen space with none other than Shahrukh Khan in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi . Though Anushka is no stunner like Katrina or Aishwarya, she has won over the critics with a performance that’s laudable for any newcomer. While Anushka had the benefit of being launched opposite a big star, Prachi Desai had no such advantage. Making her film debut in Rock On opposite Farhan Akhtar (who also debuted as an actor), Prachi held the viewers spellbound with her riveting performance. Mugdha Godse , too, managed to hold her place in Fashion despite the presence of powerhouse performers like Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranaut . But it’s quite unlikely that Mugdha can emerge as a leading lady in Bollywood films. Sonal Chauhan was the new find of Vishesh Films this year. The banner, known for launching new faces, gave ample footage to Sonal in their hit movie Jannat , even though Sonal did not actually have a true histrionic moment in the film to win over the critics. Rajeev Khandelwal graduated from small screen to big screen in the hard-hitting Aamir and proved that he could carry a film on his shoulders by mere dint of his acting prowess. On the other hand, Sikander Kher ’s debut in Woodstock Villa was a damp squib. Though the guy showed glimpses of good acting in his second film Summer of 2007 , he has a long way to go to live up to the high credentials of his super-talented mom Kiron Kher . There were also many forgettable debuts by the likes of Neha Oberoi (Woodstock Villa), Shweta Kumar ( Karzzzz ), Anurag Sinha ( Black And White ) , Adah Sharma ( 1920 ) and Amita Pathak , Adhyayan and Nakuul Mehta (in Haal-e-Dil ). Successful or not, many of these newbies are here to stay. Bollywood’s ageing brigade of 40-plus stars better watch out. Their hair implants and anti-wrinkle creams won’t get them far. |
