Young stars to watch out for in 2008

Year 2008 could make or break the careers of four young stars who had their Bollywood debuts last year.

Each one of them has their own strength. And they have tremendous potential to be the superstars of tomorrow. This year will define the course their careers will take in the future.

Deepika Padukone was the most talked-about newcomer of 2007 with her very first film Om Shanti Om opposite Shah Rukh Khan . Though her beauty and grace is unquestionable, her acting skills still need a proving.

Her projects: She has already signed ‘Chandni Chowk to China’ (previously titled Made In China ) with Akshay Kumar . She is also doing an important role in Siddharth Anand’s next film for Yashraj Films . Besides this, she has been finalized for Saif Ali Khan ’s home production to be directed by Imtiaz Ali . And she is being considered for another film called ‘Blue’ with Akshay Kumar.

Ranbir Kapoor talks and walks like a man more mature than his age. His first film Saawariya may not have gone on to become a hit, but it definitely showcased Ranbir’s acting skills. It was not for nothing that a Bollywood great like Amitabh Bachchan had praises for Ranbir after watching the film.

His projects: Ranbir is set to play Bipasha Basu ’s love interest in the Siddharth Anand film for YRF. And now the latest news is that he has been approached by B R Films to play the leading man in their film to be directed by Rahul Dholakia.

Sonam Kapoor may not have elicited as many praises as her co-star in ‘Saawariya’, but she has managed to get a film with another big director in Bollywood. Her homely looks may not make her an ideal Bollywood heroine, but she has a face and intensity that will get her many character roles, if she is able to hone her acting skills.

Her projects: After her debut in a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film, Sonam is now working with Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra in Dilli 6 . Talks are also on for projects with other producers.

Neil Nitin Mukesh has unconventionally good looks and a simmering intensity that make him one of the most promising stars of the future. His debut in Johnny Gaddaar fetched him accolades, but Neil is not sitting on them. He is not getting carried away either. He is apparently in no hurry to get to the big league. And that, apart from his acting prowess, may prove his strong point.

His projects: Neil wants to maintain a balance between offbeat films and mainstream cinema. He is doing director Sudhir Mishra’s film Tera Kya Hoga Johnny . He has also entered into film contracts with different production houses.
