He is just going there to direct an opera ballet. The debacle of his last movie Saawariya now a history, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali has moved on to his next project. No, it’s not a Bollywood movie but a French musical play about an Indian queen who sacrificed herself for her kingdom.
The musical ballet was composed by French musician Albert Roussel in the early 20th century. The play was first performed in 1923. It tells a tragic story set in 13th century, when India was being invaded by Mughals. Since ‘Padmavati’ is an elaborate musical with colorful costumes and heart-rending drama, Bhansali was an apt choice for Paris's prestigious opera house Theatre du Chatelet to direct the musical. The French opera will reportedly have six shows beginning from March 14. The role of Padmavati will be played by actress Marie-Nicole Lemieux from the French-speaking Canadian province of Quebec. STORY OF PADMAVATI The story takes place in Chitoor in 13th century India where prince Ratan is married to a beautiful bride named Padmavati. Mughal king Allauddin visits Ratan’s court and is smitten by Padmavati’s beauty. Later, Allauddin gives an ultimatum to Ratan to hand over Padmavati to him or face a devastating war. In the war, prince Ratan’s army loses many soldiers and the city of Chitoor faces the risk of being run over by Alauddin’s army. In such a dilemma, Padmavati kills her wounded husband and dies herself as sati on his funeral pyre to save her kingdom from Allauddin’s army.
