Jodhaa Akbar – an ode to love!

Ashutosh Gowarikar’s movie Jodhaa Akbar is not so much a historical as it is an ode to love.

Though a historical, Gowarikar describes ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ as a love story. In the director’s words, the film is about how love sprouts and blossoms between a couple after their marriage.

In the film, the epic romance between Mughal emperor Akbar ( Hrithik Roshan ) and Rajput princess Jodhaa ( Aishwarya Rai ) begins with a marriage of alliance between two different and distinct cultures. Jodhaa’s father, king Bharmal of Amer, hopes to win peace with the Mughals by marrying his beautiful daughter Jodhaa to Jalaluddin Akbar. What begins as a marriage of political alliance between two kingdoms becomes a touching love story between Jodhaa and Akbar as the latter tries to win Jodhaa’s love.

Gowarikar says one should not look for historical facts and accuracies in ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ because the film is only 30 percent history and 70 percent his own imagination.

“I never intended to make a bio-pic, nor did I want to make a historical document. Though the story’s background is set in history, the characters are mine. No historian knows how Jodhaa or Akbar behaved. So I imagined their romance and the tender moments they might have shared together,” says Gowarikar.

Throwing more light on the subject, Gowarikar says Jodhaa and Akbar did not marry willingly. Akbar married Jodhaa as a political maneuver and Jodhaa married Akbar for the sake of her father and the Rajput kingdom. The focus of the film’s story is to show the evolution of love between Jodhaa and Akbar.

But is the film relevant in present times?

“Yes, it is a subject that we can identify with today,” replies the soft-spoken Gowarikar.

Even the film’s leading actress Aishwarya Rai has said that the minute she read the script she knew ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ would be “an intriguing love story that has never been told before”.
