Aamir Khan dreams of making movies on Mahabharata

Actor, director and producer Aamir Khan has a dream – a mammoth dream to make a series of films on the great Hindu epic Mahabharata.

Written by sage Vyasa many millennia ago, Mahabharata and its episodes – the Bhagvad Gita, in particular – have been the bedrock of the Indian thought and philosophy since times immemorial. Now, for the first time, an Indian filmmaker is thinking of translating the epic on the celluloid for the world to see.

Aamir Khan, who has won millions of hearts with his directorial debut Taare Zameen Par , has a dream of making a number of movies on the Mahabharata.

The actor was recently in Delhi to screen TZP for President Pratibha Patil. He spoke to The Times of India about his ambitious project.

“If I had to make a period piece, I would make a movie – a series of movies, actually – on the Mahabharata…That would be one definitive thing India could give to world cinema,” Aamir is quoted as saying.

Aamir says his most favourite characters from the epic are Karna, Arjuna and Krishna.

In fact, many years ago, Aamir had revealed in a TV interview that it is his dream to play the role of Karna someday.

But Aamir presently thinks he is too short to play the role of warriors like Karna or Arjuna. So he would rather love to play Krishna.

However, the project is still just a dream. If it materializes, Aamir says it would take him at least five years to do the research and another five or ten years to make a series of films, from seven to ten.

Aamir says the idea excites him, but its sheer scale scares him as well.
