Malaika and Arbaaz make a bakra out of media

It was all smoke without fire. The rumour of the split between Malaika Arora and Arbaaz Khan was nothing but a publicity stunt.

The film industry was shaken yesterday by the unbelievable story about the celebrity couple splitting up. Malaika herself had said that Arbaaz was “remarrying” and refused to comment further, stating that the matter was “too personal”.

Now, it is clear that all this was just to garner publicity for an ad campaign that Malaika and Arbaaz are doing together.

When Malaika said that Arbaaz was “remarrying” she did not care to clarify that he would only re-marry in the ad campaign. And the girl he would remarry would be none other than herself.

The concept of the ad shows a couple going through love and separation and ends with their reunion.

Malaika and Arbaaz, neither of whose careers is going great guns, evidently made the media believe that Arbaaz was actually getting remarried. And their refusal to clarify the rumours and stating that the matter was “too personal” was definitely not without the intention of creating a sensation.

As Shah Rukh Khan once put it: “the relation between media and celebrity is symbiotic”.

True. Media is often accused of sensationalizing things to grab people’s attention. But Malaika and Arbaaaz’s is an example of celebrity using the media for their purpose. And that too in a shrewd way.
