Shah Rukh Khan's new show fails to garner good ratings

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan 's new reality show on Star Plus, titled ‘Kya aap Paanchvi Pass se thez hain’ has not garnered good ratings and lost out to the IPL matches in terms of TRPs.

SRK’s magic would have worked for his IPL team. But it is clearly not reaping the same results for the much-hyped Star Plus quiz show, Paanchvi Pass. With opening ratings hovering around at 3 and 4, media planners say it’s 40 per cent less than what was expected from the show.

Compare this to the bumper opening of the IPL at 8 points for the opening match and a consistent all India ratings of 4-5. While some media planners say the IPL effect is the major reason for the show’s initial failure others blame it’s below average content.

Trade pundits have given many reasons for the slow start for Paanchvi Pass. One is that SRK has been over exposed with all the IPL and the Knight riders’ hungama diverting from the Paanchvi Pass hullabaloo.

Another reason may be that IPL may be having more entertaining power than Pannchvi Pass and is drawing the audience away from the reality game show.

Leading sponsors of the Paanchvi Pass show have expressed their unhappiness to the Broadcasters on how the show has turned out and have asked Star TV to rework the format the show.

Sponsors say the format has been diluted compared to the original ‘Are you a fifth grader’ on which Paanchvi Pass has been designed. They have also alleged that Star is overplaying SRK’s star quotient in the show.

The head of a leading sponsor said: “The content leaves a lot to be desired. The way the questions are structured is not very engaging and it’s quite different from the original ‘Are you a fifth grader’ show.”

A member of the production team added that internationally the show has a lot of focus on education, which is not seen in its Indian avatar and even the look and feel of the show as it was shown to the advertisers.

One sponsor said,” There is too much of song and dance in the show, and we have been complaining to Star officials from Day One.”

Having already shot 30% of Paanchvi Pass episodes, Star is now making desperate attempts to keep its sponsors and advertisers happy. The broadcaster has offered its sponsors free advertising on the show’s re-runs on weekdays and a back-to-back three hour show on Sunday afternoons.
