The Bachchan juggernaut on the move

Three top Bollywood stars in a family or a film or a musical tour together! Can it get bigger than this?

The brand Bachchan is on the move. It is a self-propelled juggernaut spearheaded by Amitabh Bachchan and flanked by his son Abhishek Bachchan and bahu Aishwarya Rai .

The inimitable sexagenarian has ruled the hearts of millions of movie buffs for decades, and it is solely for this reason his son Abhishek wasn’t booted out of B-Town after a string of failures until he eventually goaded himself into a bankable star with a couple of Mani Ratnam movies. Aishwarya, on the other hand, was perhaps born with a silver spoon in her perfectly sculpted mouth. Everything her delicate finger touches seems to turn to gold. Once a title-holder of Miss World tiara, Ash has, over the years, gone on from being the pin-up girl of Bollywood to the demure and somewhat self-effacing Bachchan bahu.

Now what happens when these three celluloid giants (already part of a “regular family”) tag up together on the big screen, at an award show, or for a musical tour?

We first saw a glimpse of the power of this trinity in the delightful ‘Kajra Re’ song a few years ago. Now, they reunite in the latest Ram Gopal Varma flick Sarkar Raj . While Big B and beta Abhi reprise their respective roles from Sarkar , Aishwarya completes the picture in the role of a confident and ambitious businesswoman who unintentionally ends up sparking a political war between rival factions in the film.

And it is not just a coincidence that the film will premiere in Bangkok at the IIFA weekend of which Big B happens to be the brand ambassador. So the three Bachchans and Ramu have packed their bags and headed for the star-studded premiere in the Thai capital where others of the Bachchan ilk are also likely to descend on June 6.

While it is still premature to comment anything on the box-office prospects of ‘Sarkar Raj’, rest assured that there won’t be any let up from the Bachchans in reaching out to their fans. For, on the anvil is the ‘The Unforgettable Tour’, which is a series of Bollywood style musical concerts – with naach gaana and all that jazz – to be held in the USA, Canada and the UK. And the Bachchan family picture could be completed with Jaya Bachchan most likely to join the gang.

And when this loaded juggernaut roars, we can expect some proverbial sholay.
