Saif Ali Khan is slated to play a nawab in a film set in 1857, the year of India’s first uprising against the colonial British.
The movie would be a lavish period drama to be directed by Sudhir Mishra , most of whose movies are set in the past. The film would be a black comedy about a nawab and a nautch girl.
It is said to be tentatively titled ‘The Nawab, The Nautch Girl and The Johns Company’.
Mishra has approached Saif to play the role of nawab while his favourite Chitrangada Singh is set to play the nautch girl.
Reports say Saif gave a very positive response to Mishra when the director approached him. The actor was excited by the idea of playing a nawab on the lines of the hedonistic nawab Wajid Ali Shah of Avadh. So enthused is Saif about the project that he has reportedly offered to even produce it.
In the same vein, Mishra is determined to have Saif in the film. He says only an actor like Saif – with a natural blend of boyish charm and regality – can do justice to the role.
Mishra is presently working on his Aur Devdas , a contemporary, politicized adaptation of ‘Devdas’. Saif, on the other hand, is busy with his first home production being directed by Imtiaz Ali in London.
