God Tussi Great HoGod Tussi Great Ho : Movie Review

‘God Tussi Great Ho’ is a timepass comedy full of pedestrian humour and puerile jokes that make you laugh more because of their stupidity than their intrinsic wit (or the lack of it).

If there is any wish one would ask of God to fulfill, it is to rid the Bollywood filmmakers of their addiction to rip off Hollywood hits in the name of ‘creativity’.

Despite writer-director Rumi Jaffery’s claim to the contrary, God Tussi Great Ho is a copy of the Jim Carrey starrer ‘Bruce Almighty’. The movie borrows the basic plot from the Hollywood flick and twists it to suit the Indian context. And the result is not so great. The rehash works only in fits and starts. The comedy is mostly corny and the laugh-inducing gags are few and far between. And this ‘far between’ is also full of senseless songs that seems to have nothing to do with the narrative and are squeezed in just for the heck of it.

Salman Khan plays Arun Pajapati, a man devastatingly out of luck. Everything he tries to do goes spectacularly wrong. He works for a TV channel and his very first show is a flop. He has a crush on his colleague Alia ( Priyanka Chopra ) but doesn’t have guts to tell her. On top of it, his professional and romantic rival Rocky ( Sohail Khan ) keeps outshining him at every step.

Back home, Arun has a bickering retired father ( Anupam Kher ) who keeps taunting him for being a failure, a sister who is unmarried because she is unattractive, and a mother who prays to the very God Arun blames for all his misfortunes.

One day, after losing his job Arun vents his anger on the Almighty for making his life a mess. Next thing we know is that God ( Amitabh Bachchan ) Himself appears before Arun and grants him his divine power for 10 days to put things right.

Arun uses his power for personal, professional gain and becomes a hero overnight. But all his godly acts inevitably create one problem after another until the whole world becomes a chaotic place. Arun realizes that God’s work should better be left to Him and whatever He does is for good.

Comparing ‘God Tussi Great Ho’ with ‘Bruce Almighty’ is almost unavoidable. Not only does Rumi Jaffery borrow the basic plot, he even sticks to the same details as in the Hollywood flick. But for the colour of his skin, Amitabh Bachchan is almost the mirror image of Morgan Freeman, who played the Almighty all dressed in white. And is it just a coincidence that the protagonist of ‘God Tussi’ is in the same profession as in ‘Bruce Almighty’?

Salman Khan is no Jim Carrey but the actor still pulls off some sequences with aplomb. The actor’s comedy mostly borders on slapstick and his expressions range from being perpetually peeved to blissfully indifferent. And what’s with those bleary eyes and puffed-up body. The star needs to check his weight and better his fashion sense.

Priyanka Chopra doesn’t have much role to write about and she seems to play her part mechanically. Sohail Khan is quite entertaining in a few scenes while Anupam Kher is over the top. Satish Kaushik rocks with just a brief appearance as a pot-bellied mantri.

At the end of the day, ‘God Tussi Great Ho’ is just another poor rehash that highlights the tragic lack of originality among Bollywood filmmakers. I bet if Rumi Jaffery is himself made to sit on the lie detecting chair (that Salman makes in the film) the director will fail with flying colours. And he might even blame the Almighty for it.

God is Great! Sadly, this film isn’t.
