All the eulogies about Akshay Kumar emerging as the undisputed, numero uno superstar of Bollywood seem a tad pre-mature?He's the star on whom others have piggybacked their way to success. Katrina Kaif would not have been where she is today had it not been for the crowd-pulling charm of Akshay that ensured the success of strictly average flicks like Namastey London , Welcome and Singh Is Kinng . Vipul Amrutlal Shah and Anees Bazmee , despite their directorial shortcomings, have struck gold at the box office because the crowds went to see the man with the goofy grin and his impeccable sense of comic timing. But today, the juggernaut that Akshay fuels stands the risk of getting derailed. Granted that the guy is funny, but for how long can audience extract laughs out of Akshay's goofiness. The actor, a master at tomfooling his way through mindless capers, is becoming repetitive and nothing proves this more than the flak which his latest film Chandni Chowk To China has deservedly got.
The movie has the same brand of pedestrian humour we've seen umpteen times from the actor - be it his over-the-top antics, his self-deprecating gags or his buffoonery. Truth be told, if Akshay doesn't reinvent himself soon, he might end up penning the script of his own career's ruin. And the fault partly lies with the directors who keep on signing Akshay in the same kind of roles. After all, a diamond in the hands of blind is as good as stone. To his credit, Akshay has already made the right career move of doing a variety of roles rather than sticking to slapstick comedy. So seeing Akki rubbing his shoulders with sharks underwater (in Blue ) or watching him do a Houdini and unshackle himself in unlikeliest circumstances (in Eight By Ten ) would certainly be a refreshing change not just for the actor but for his fans too. And that includes me as well. |
