Almost eight years after the world witnessed the most audacious and deadly terror attack, Bollywood finally wakes up to weave stories around the historic event. Releasing this Friday would be New York , a Yashraj Film about three friends in NY whose lives go for a toss after the 9/11 attacks on America. The film, directed by Kabir Khan , aims to highlight how several innocent people became victims of the US prejudice against the people of a particular religion. While promoting the film a few days back, Kabir Khan said in a press meet: "New York is not an America bashing film. It tells the story from both sides. It doesn't at all sympathize with the terrorists who killed thousands of innocents on that fateful day. But at the same time it also shows how so many innocents became terror suspects overnight and how so many lives changed overnight."
The film doesn't keep 9/11 as the pivotal point of the story. Rather the story focuses on three friends played by John Abraham , Katrina Kaif and Neil Nitin Mukesh , and the 9/11 attacks forms only a backdrop of this story. However, coming eight years after the actual incident, 'New York' seems like a film that's years too late. "'New York' is belated...it has been nearly eight years since the incident happened. The Mumbai film industry is very late in reacting to this kind of a storyline...The topicality of such a theme is lost because of the delay," film historian Gautam Kaul is quoted as saying by a news agency. Interestingly, this is not the first time 9/11 has been touched upon by an Indian filmmaker. Naseeruddin Shah set the climax of his directorial debut Yun Hota To Kya Hota on 9/11 in New York. And now two more films are being made on themes similar to this. Karan Johar is making My Name Is Khan in which Shahrukh Khan plays an autistic man who becomes a terror suspect in the US because of his Muslim name. Director Rensil D'Silva is also directing a film titled 'Qurbaan' (previously titled Jihad ) in which Saif Ali Khan plays a suave terrorist. |
