Delhi 6 – Some interesting tidbits!

The director had to pluck out incidents from his growing up years in Chandni Chowk – where he used to live at his nani’s house – to come up with the story of ‘Delhi 6’. The movie stars Abhishek Bachchan as a US-returned youth who is captivated by the old Delhi and falls in love with a feisty girl ( Sonam Kapoor ) who wants to leave the walled city. As the film is slated for February 20 release, here are some tidbits about ‘Delhi 6’.

LABOUR OF LOVE


Rakeysh Mehra describes ‘Delhi 6’ as his most difficult film to date. In fact, he had the story ready before he made RDB and even narrated it to Abhishek and Aamir Khan . But somehow RDB got made first and Rakeysh is thankful for it because today he feels “more mature to handle a complex and sensitive subject like Delhi 6”.

DELHI IN RAJASTHAN

Ideally, Rakeysh would have loved to shoot the film on location in Old Delhi. But given the fact that the place is always crowded, that wasn’t possible. So the film’s unit took over an entire town called Sambhar on the outskirts of Jaipur and converted it into Chandni Chowk. Most of the film was shot there. However, Mehra did shoot some scenes on actual location at Delhi-6.

FAMILIAL BONDING

Mehra tried a very different way of working in ‘Delhi 6’. Since the film is about inter-personal relationships, he made the entire crew live like one big family. There were no separate vanity vans on the set. Everyone shared one make-up room and one make-up man. All the actors dined together and in the evenings there used to be script reading sessions. Sometimes a DJ would be called in and everyone would dance together. The idea, Mehra says, was to create a bonding between the cast so that it can be captured on the camera.

CHOCOLATE BUDDIES

Actor Atul Kulkarni (who played a radical Hindu in RDB) has a fondness for chocolates and carried them to the film’s schedule at Sambhar. Once Abhishek got to know about it, he developed fondness for Atul and would have a share of chocolates after every meal. In fact, Abhi’s choco-binge led to a serious weight scare for the actor as he had to keep in shape for continuity sake.

JUNK FOOD

Abhishek often used to treat the film’s cast to spicy food like kachauris but would abstain himself. “He’d get us kachauris and all kinds of goodies, but refused to tuck in himself,” says co-star Divya Dutta . Speaking about junk food, even Sonam had difficulty controlling her taste buds while she was shooting in Delhi. She gorged on everything from golgappas, chaat, dahi bhalle and non-veg food from the Karim’s.

‘Delhi 6’ features a host of talented actors like Waheeda Rahman , Om Puri , Rishi Kapoor , Supriya Pathak and Pawan Malhotra , among others. The film has music by A R Rahman .
