Ek : The Power of One - Movie Review

Ek - The Power of One Watching Ek - The Power of One is like surviving a powerful and unpleasant bolt from a distant past.

It's a film that rests on the power of none. Actors, director, action director, music director - all disappoint in equal measure in this movie that seems like a collage of popular clichés from action flicks and family dramas of the 80s and early 90s.

Bobby Deol plays Nandu, a hitman, who's hired by a politician ( Sachin Khedekar ) to enact an assassination attempt before public to garner sympathy votes in elections. Ironically, someone else shoots the neta before Nandu does, but the blame falls on our hapless hero. Before cops could catch Nandu, he catches a train and ends up in a Punjab village where a very Bharjatya-esque family mistakes him as Puran, their son.

Guilt-ridden Nandu, who's indirectly responsible for Puran's death, starts living with the family where he rediscovers the values of love, caring, sharing and much more. He falls in love with sohni Punjabi kudi Preet ( Shriya Saran ).

But it's not long before the law catches up with Nandu in the irritatingly amusing form of an eccentric CBI officer ( Nana Patekar ) who dresses up like a rap star and speaks in double entendres.

A remake of the Telugu film, 'Athadu', 'Ek - The Power of One' comes two decades late in its day. The film swells with excesses of all kind - Bobby's broodiness, Nana's zaniness, Kulbhushan Kharbanda 's weepiness and other kinds of sundry silliness. Action is over the top for most of the scenes.

Bobby is wooden as ever and successfully manages minimal facial expressions. Shriya Saran has a small role but she's charming and watchable. Nana Patekar brings some momentum to the film, but even his antics fail to prevent viewers from dozing off. Jackie Shroff looks genuinely disturbed. Chunky Pandey and Zarina Wahab are hardly there.

Director Sangeeth Sivan has tried to make a wholesome entertainer by putting in a bit of every masala in the movie. There's a pinch of romance and punches of action. There's a dash of comedy and heaps of melodrama. But sadly, nothing sticks.

'Ek - The Power of One' deserves no more than one star.
