Films may not release in multiplexes from April 4

The United Producers Forum, comprising of various associations of producers and distributors including bigwigs like Yash Chopra , Ramesh Sippy and Mukesh Bhatt , is taking a tough stand against multiplexes. The producers have been demanding an equal share in revenue regardless of the star cast or budget of films. Presently, multiplexes take more than 50 percent revenue on big budget films.

"Until the multiplexes agree to the demands proposed by the producers and distributors, the marketing and distribution of all new films set for release from April 4 has been suspended," renowned producer Mukesh Bhatt told reporters in Mumbai.


"It is a do-or-die situation for us. We have to survive in the industry and so we have been asking for an equal revenue sharing model," Mr. Bhatt stressed.

"We spent crores of rupees for making and distributing the movie, that too with a huge risk. They (multiplexes) just have to release it. They earn revenue from various sources like canteen, parking, and advertisers among others. Even then, they have been demanding more revenue share," Mr. Bhatt explained.

Apparently, the last film to release in multiplexes would be the Akshay Kumar -starrer 8x10 Tasveer . And if the differences between the producers and multiplexes aren’t sorted out, movie buffs may have to queue up outside single screen theatres to get tickets for the films after April 4.
