Kareena Kapoor being sought to play Jessica Lal

Jessica, as most of you know, was shot point blank in a Delhi restaurant in 1999 and her case dragged in the courts for years during which many witnesses turned hostile and the accused were acquitted. Finally, after much outcry by the media and the public, the case reopened and the accused, son of a former minister, was sentenced to life imprisonment.

During the days when the accused were acquitted, director Rajkumar Gupta was struck by a headline he saw in a newspaper. The headline read ‘No One Killed Jessica’ and had a huge impact on the director.


“It (the headline) immediately set me thinking. Over the years, as the case dragged on, that headline acquired immense ironical overtones,” the director is quoted by a news agency.

Now, Gupta has penned the script of a movie on the Jessica murder case and plans to title it “No One Killed Jessica”. He has already approached Kareena Kapoor to play one of the two leading roles – Jessica and her sister Sabrina who fought tirelessly to get justice for her murdered sister.

“I did approach Kareena Kapoor initially to play one of the two protagonists. But nothing more can be said about the casting right now,” Gupta told the agency.
