Meet Kalki Koechlin, Chandramukhi of 'Dev. D'

Kalki was born to French parents and was based in Bangalore before getting a chance to debut in a Bollywood film. Prior to auditioning for her role, all she knew was that Chandramukhi was glamorous and that she was a prostitute.

But the 25-year-old admits that it’s an interesting and challenging role. Her name in the movie is Chanda, who is a high profile escort and meets the drug addict Dev, played by Abhay Deol .


Kalki came to Mumbai two years back after studying drama and theatre at London University. She continued to stay in Mumbai, doing advertisements and theatre. And then destiny knocked on her door. She was asked for an audition by UTV Spotboy, producers of ‘Dev D’.

For Kalki, it wasn’t a dream debut, but she feels lucky to work with Anurag Kashyap in her first film. “Professionally, I like him for the fact that he is very open to ideas from his actors and allows them to add new dimensions to their characters in his films,” Kalki is quoted as saying.

During the shooting of the film, Kalki also fell in love with Kashyap.

‘Dev D’, though based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s classic novel Devdas , is a contemporary story, where the director tries to portray how Devdas would have responded in present scenario. The movie also deals with the sexual desires of an individual.

The film would be launch pad for another new comer Mahi Gill , who plays Paro. It’s set for February 6 release.
