Way back in the 1950s, when the film industry was still in nascent stages, B.R. Chopra began a naya daur in Indian cinema. His legacy is being carried forward to this day.On Wednesday, November 05, the Indian film industry lost a cine veteran and giant. Baldev Raj Chopra or B.R. Chopra died at the age of 94. The legendary director-cum-producer was a force behind the production house B.R Films which has produced some timeless classics of Hindi film industry.
B.R. Chopra, an MA from Lahore University in English Literature migrated to Mumbai after India's independence in 1947. He began his own production house 'B.R. Films' in the year 1955, and created history with his first produced movie 'Naya Daur' in 1957. The movie was a runaway hit. His first directorial venture 'Afsana' (in 1951), starring Ashok Kumar in double role, was a hit. He then continued making movies that were different from the league, like 'Nikaah', dealing with Muslim marriage laws, or 'Insaaf Ka Tarazoo' where he handled the subject of child rape with utter sensitivity. His filmography includes hits like 'Gumrah', 'Dhund', 'Humraz', 'Waqt', 'Ittefaq' and 'Dhool Ka Phool'. B.R Chopra will always be remembered for his mega serial 'Mahabharat', under his B.R Films. His brother Yash Chopra is also a known face in Hindi film industry. The B R Chopra legacy continues with his son Ravi Chopra who revived B.R. Films with movies like Baghban and Baabul for which he himself has penned the story. B.R Chopra received the Dadasahaeb Phalke Award in the year 1998. The person who took the plunge to change the scene of Indian cinema and produced some of the biggest hits always advocated for quality cinema which can enlighten the society. He was skeptical about the current scenario of Indian Cinema. He thought that the rise of money and glamour has tarnished the image of Indian film Industry. |
