'Slumdog' making millions at box-office

Slumdog Millionaire , a slice-of-life drama about the rags-to-riches rise of an underdog from Mumbai slums, may not be an Indian production but it is crossing the overseas box-office mark ever reached by any film with Indian actors in lead.

The last record at the North American box office was set by Ashutosh Gowarikar's Jodhaa Akbar which raked in a decent $3.4 million while running at 125 theatres over a period of nine weeks. 'Slumdog', which is expected to run longer, has surpassed the figure with a $3.8 million mark in only three weeks at 49 theatres.


And with the critics raving about the film and calling it an Oscar material, 'Slumdog' is expected to go from strength to strength in the coming weeks and months.

Starring Dev Patel and Freida Pinto in lead roles, 'Slumdog Millionaire' recounts the travails of an 18-year-old orphan who goes on to win a staggering Rs 2 crore on India's "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" game show and the process is nabbed by the police on suspicion of cheating.
Irrfan Khan plays the cop while Anil Kapoor plays the show's host.

Earlier this week, the movie won three trophies at British Independent Film Awards (BIFA), and was on Thursday named Best Picture of the Year by the National Board of Review.
