Bollywood 'sundaris' ruling the roost in the South

Bollywood sundaries are in great demand nowadays.

Not only are they being wooed in their hometown Mumbai, they have become the hot favorites in Tamil and Telugu cinema, too.

A case in point is Rajiv Mennon’s Kandukondain Kandukondain, which casts Aishwarya Rai and Tabu – two major actresses of Hindi Cinema.

Well, it seems that movie buffs in the south have got bored watching the plump, dusky damsels on the silver screen and are, therefore, growing a liking for Bollywood’s glam girls. In fact, on the flipside, many Bollywood actresses themselves seek roles in south now, especially with directors like Mani Ratnam and Priyadarshan.

And why shouldn't they? The industry down south enjoys the reputation of being highly professional and disciplined.

Be it Manisha Koirala (who recently starred in Tamil blockbuster Madhulvan) or Sonali Bendre (Kadhalar Dinam) or Raveena Tandon (Upendra) or Aishwarya or Tabu – these actresses candidly accept that working in the South spruced them up into better actresses. Tabu, who starred in Kala Pani and Virasat confesses that 'Priyadarshan (the director of both the films) played a crucial role in the grooming and growing of Tabu, the actress'.

Once there was a time when actresses from the south like Vyajantimala, Hema Malini, Rekha, Sridevi dominated the Hindi Screen. Interestingly, the trend is in opposite direction nowadays. Now it is Bollywood sundaris who are ruling the roost in the south.
