With the Bollywood’s femmes doing their bit of shuttling between the southern film industry and Mumbai, now it looks like the men are following suit. Nana Patekar, known for his volatile histrionics, is exploring newer vistas down south to parade his acting prowess.
Nana is making his foray outside Bollywood for the first time in a Malayalam film, Ramanam. The movie is based on the life of famous Malayalam poet Changampuzha Krishna Pillai.
To be directed by V K Prakash, the movie will revolve around the life and times of Changampuzha Krishna Pillai. Nana, needless to say, is playing the poet.
Apart from well known actor Murali who enacts the role of the poet’s best friend Edapally Ragahavan Pillai, the movie also features popular Malayalam stars like Lalu Alex, Srividya and Nandani, among others.
The lyrical beauty of Girish Puthanchery is being beautifully molded into music by Ouseppachan.
Nana, however, is not the first Bollywood actor to go south. Om Puri, Nasruddin Shah, Amrish Puri and Rajat Kapoor all have starred in Malayalam movies. However, none, barring Rajat Kapoor, could leave a lasting impression. Rajat not only won many a Malayali heart, but also the Kerala State Award for best actor.
For all his acting prowess, Nana will be facing a big challenge as the poet’s life he portrays is full of hues and shades. Hope he comes up trumps.
