Meera strikes a purple patch

A national award for Best Actress, busy as a bee in Malayalam movies, offers flowing thick and fast from Telugu, Kannada as well as Tamil films. What more can you ask for? No wonder, Meera Jasmine , the most happening star in the South, is reigning supreme on the reel right now!

The wrinkles in her personal life may not have been fully ironed out. But a close look at her career graph would illustrate that Ms Jasmine is riding the crest of a success wave on the silverscreen.

Meera, who burst on Kollywood with Lohitadas's "Suthradharan", received the national award for Best Actress from President APJ Abdul Kalam only the other day. The prestigious award came her way for a standout performance in TV Chandran's absorbing film "Paadam Onnu Oru Vilapam". Meera rose to great histrionic heights acting out the trauma of a guileless Muslim girl in a tradition-bound society.

Ms Jasmine(she seems to have a particular liking to do the Muslim girl's role) did it again in Kamal's "Perumazhakkalam". Her Razia, again a hapless Muslim woman who has to go through untold sufferings in life, would remain etched in the viewer's memory long after he has left the cinema hall. It was another awesome performance from this wonderful actress.

Her latest film "Achchuvinte Amma", directed by veteran Sathyan Anthikkad, has also touched a responsive chord among the discerning Malayalee audience. In the film Meera plays the daughter of Urvashi, and the mother-daughter bonding has been essayed with amazing versatility by the twosome.

It is not as if her fame is confined to Kollywood. Meera is busy in Tollywood and Tamil film world, too. Right now, she is doing a Telugu movie.

Besides, she is to play the female lead in Cheran's next Tamil movie. Cheran himself plays the hero in the yet-to-be-named movie, which is in the making. Meera also figures in the Tamil remake of Malayalam film "Kasthooriman", directed by her mentor Lohitadas. She had also forayed into the Kannada moviedom with a film titled "Maurya".

Needless to say, Meera is queening it over in her reel life. A pleasant contrast to the nightmarish experiences she had to undergo, ironically, at the hands of her own near and dear ones in real life.
