Meera won't rest on laurels!

She said an emphatic "No" to offers from two prestigious Tamil banners. The "'victims" of Malayalam actress Meera Jasmine 's rejection were the KV Anand-directed "Kana Kandein" and Surya's "Gajini".

Meera's 'loss' were the gains of Gopika and Asin, who did the female lead roles in Kana Kandein and Gajini respectively.

Meera's decision caused many eyebrows to be raised. But the talented heroine herself seemed totally unconcerned.

But, why did she turn down the plum projects in the first instance? You might ask. A reasonable guess is that Meera is putting a premium on good roles. What matters most to this guileless girl from Kerala is quality and not quantity.

After all, she has acted in only two-three films during the last two years. One was Kamal's Perumazhakkalam. It was a class act from Meera, which drew gushing reviews. Then there was Sathyan Anthikkad's "Achuvinde Amma". It again drew an enthusiastic response from an appreciating audience.

But the buzz is that there is another -- and perhaps closer to truth -- reason: The national award for best actress she won for her flawless performance as a Muslim girl in TV Chandran's "Paadam Onnu Oru Vilapam" has whetted her appetite for awards. Having won an award for her role in a Malayalam movie, Meera now wants, so goes the grapevine, an award in Tamil and Telugu too! Well, nothing wrong in it. And the gifted actress is quite capable of achieving it too.

So, how is she going about the task? Reports have it that Meera is just now concentrating on the Tamil remake of her Malayalam movie "Kasthurimaan". It was directed by her friend, philosopher and guide, director Lohitadas. The Malayalam version was a superhit. Meera wants to do so well in the Tamil version as well so that it secures another national award for her.

That is not the end of the story. Tamil filmdom is abuzz with talk that she also wants to produce a Telugu film, of course, with the aim of bagging an award for a Telugu film, too! This movie, which is a serious take on the lot of adivasis in Andhra Pradesh, is being directed by journalist and director KNR Shastri.

One can only marvel at the Jasmine girl's single-minded devotion to the chosen task. She presents a welcome contrast from glam girls who would go to any length to bag a film and a role.
