Malayalam cinema goes digital

Malayalam cinema has gone digital with the VK Prakash-directed Moonnamathoraal. A trail-blazing movie, it has been shot entirely on a High Definition Camera and projected digitally.

Emil and Eric Digital Private Limited, a Thrissur-based company, has provided the digital technology.

Moonnamathoraal a suspense movie featuring Jayaram and Jyothirmayi in the lead roles, will be released through satellite simultaneously in 150 theatres in Kerala.

The digital technology will avoid the huge production costs that celluloid prints entail. It will also considerably minimise the menace of piracy. Because it is made on the digital format, retakes will be inexpensive.

Director Prakash has directed films like Punaradhivasam, Freaky Chakra, Mullavalliyum Thenmavum and ‘The Police’.

Since there are no film rolls, the film will be downloaded on hard disks on the day of release. The digital format also ensures better picture quality compared to film rolls, which tend to lose clarity after a number of screenings.

The film has Jayaram playing police officer Jeeva, who is married to novelist Bala (Jyotirmayi). They happen to occupy the haunted Krishnapuram palace, nestled amidst tea plantations. The film unspools their eerie experiences in the palace. It has been shot in the picture post-card Peerumade.
