Rajnikant: The 'sultan of style' is 56

Tamil superstar Rajnikant celebrated his 56th birthday on Monday without any fanfare or glitz that attends birthdays of superstars. As usual, Rajni was out of Chennai on his birthday.

Shivajirao Gaekwad (Rajni's real name) spent the day by visiting the Tirupati temple in Andhra Pradesh. The 'sultan of style', who reached the temple town by car, was received at the temple by the temple authorities, says the Kollywood buzz.

The only celebration he allowed himself was a cake-cutting function to mark the audio launch of friend Bhagyaraj's film ‘Parijatham’ on Saturday. The function was attended by his daughter Aishwarya and son-in-law Dhanush.

This birthday is special for Rajnikant as he is at the zenith of popularity in the wake of the phenomenal success of his latest film, Chandramukhi . Reports have it that the film has grossed an astounding Rs 50 crore as distributors share, a feat unrivalled by any other film in south India.

The ‘Chandramukhi’ success must have come as a big relief for the superstar, whose earlier flick, Baba had bombed at the box office, causing anxiety in the minds of the icon. ‘Chandramukhi's remarkable run asserts in an unambiguous manner the enduring value of the Rajnikant brand.

Thirty years have passed since Rajni began his cinematic innings. The villain-turned hero went on to become the numero uno, a status he has enjoyed for the last 20 years. And the phenomenon shows no signs of wear and tear. His strength: the accent on playing the do-gooder on the reel and adulation of an audience cutting across age, gender and religion.

The superstar has no intention to rest on his laurels. The man has plunged himself into the work on his next film, titled ‘Sivaji’ shooting of which is expected to start at the Film City in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

In fact, after invoking divine blessings at Tirupati temple, the inimitable icon proceeded to Hyderabad to participate in the shooting slated to begin tomorrow.
