Sreekumaran The hot news from Kollywood is that ‘Sultan of Style’ Rajnikant has at last won recognition from his home State. The Maharashtra Government has decided to honour its famous son of the soil who made it to superstardom in distant Tamil Nadu with the prestigious Raj Kapoor award in recognition of his contributions to cinema.
The award carries a prize money of Rs.1 lakh, a citation and a memento. Shivaji Rao Gaekwad (Rajni’s real name) will be presented the award at a glittering ceremony in Pune on April 30. Rajni was born in Maharashtra but moved over to Karnataka for a living. He worked for a while as a bus conductor. It was after watching his ‘style’ that a famous director K Balachander gave him a break in his ‘Apoorva Ragangal’. The rest, to use a cliché, is history. The monarch of mannerisms went on to become Number one in Tamil cinema and a cult figure with a phenomenal fan following and thousands of fan clubs spread all over the State. A recipient also of Padma Bhushan, Rajni has completed well over two decades in film acting. He has also won several state awards besides the Kalaimamani award. His path to superstardom is studded with such super duper hits like ‘Bhasha’, ‘Muthu’, ‘Padayappa’ and Chandramukhi . In between he shone on the Hindi film firmament too by doing a slew of successful movies like ‘Andha Kanoon’, ‘Giraftaar’ and ‘Gangwa’.
