Hardly has she shaken off the storm her remark on pre-marital sex had unleashed, when the former reigning queen of Tamil cinema finds herself embroiled in a new controversy. 
This time, the uproar is over a role Khushboo has been signed up to do for a Tamil film on the life of the patriarch of Dravidian Movement, EV Ramaswamy Naicker, popularly known as Periyar. The film, titled ‘Thanthai Periyar’ (Father Periyar), has Khushboo playing Periyar's second wife, Maniyammai. Veteran Sathiaraj is playing Periyar. According to the director of the film’s director Gnana Rajasekhar, Khushboo was chosen for the role because she has a round and chubby face, much like Maniyammai. Trouble erupted when the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) headed by Dr Ramadoss raised strong objection to Khushboo playing Maniammai. The PMK raised the issue in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. Its contention is that Khushboo, who insulted Tamil women with her uncharitable remarks on pre-marital sex, should not be allowed to play Maniyamma, who, according to the party is a symbol of Tamil dignity and sacrifices. The feisty actress has, however, refused to be cowed down by the PMK's aggressive stance. She has said others could not decide the direction her film career should take. The face-off has put the DMK government in Tamil Nadu in a dilemma. The state government has released Rs 95 lakh for the film, shooting of which is set to start in October. PMK is a partner in the Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) ruling the state. Whatever the denouement, Tamil film world is waiting with bated breath for the next scene in the drama being played out in Kollywood.
