Padmini: An enduring icon of Indian cinema is no more

An era has come to a close with the death of Padmini, reigning queen of Tamil cinema in the fifties and sixties.

The veteran actress breathed her last at the Apollo Hospital in Chennai at midnight on Sunday, April 24 following a heart attack.

She was 74 and is survived by her only son, Prem Anand. Her husband, Dr. Ramachandran had pre-deceased the enduring icon of Tamil cinema.

The last function she attended was the one got up to felicitate Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in Chennai on the night of September 23.

Second of the famous Travancore Sisters - elder sister Lalitha and younger sister Ragini had died years ago -- Padmini has acted in more than 250 films.

Padmini was an actress with an amazing range. She has acted in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada apart from Hindi. Among her superhit Hindi films are ‘Jis Desh Main Ganga Bahti Hai’, ‘Aashiq’ and ‘Mera Naam Joker’.

The illustrious carrier of beautiful Padmini began in 1949 at the age of 17. An excellent dancer, Padmini has acted with all the top actors of Indian cinema like MG Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan in Tamil, Sathyan and Prem Nazir in Malayalam, Raj Kapoor, Raj Kumar, Ashok Kumar and Dev Anand in Hindi.

She did stage a comeback of sorts in Malayalam films, the last two films being ‘Nokkethadoorathju Kannumnattu’ in 1984, ‘Vaasthuhara’ and ‘Dollar’.

Noted Malayalam actress Sukumari is her cousin and Shobana , her niece.
