The latest to hop on to the political bandwagon is macho hero, Sarath Kumar . The party, named Akila Samathuva Makkal Katchi (ASMK), came into being at a state-level conference held in Madurai on February 10.
Sarath Kumar, who belongs to the powerful Nadar community, struck a confident note saying that his party would capture power in Tamil Nadu by 2011. Sarath follows another hero, "Captain" Vijayakanth, who formed his own party, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) and became an MLA in the last assembly elections. The impressive performance put up by the Vijayakanth party in the electoral battle, seems to have inspired Sarath into launching his own party. Both Vijayakanth and Sarath are eager to inherit the political legacy of the late matinee idol, M G Ramachandran, who broke away from the DMK in the seventies and formed the All Indian Anna DMK. Jayalalithaa is the current president of the AIADMK. MGR was, of course, the first film star to take to politics and form his own party. He remained the Chief Minister for nine years. Almost 20 years after his death, the MGR magic continues to sway the masses of Tamil Nadu. No wonder, Sarath is eying the phenomenal vote-bank of MGR. But his efforts have been strongly opposed by Jayalalithaa who has made it clear that she is the sole inheritor of the MGR legacy. Now that Sarath has formed his own party, the battle for MGR legacy is bound to hot up, says the grapevine. Sarath's wife is M. R. Radhika who is the daughter of late veteran actor, M R Radha who shot MGR in the sixties.
