Chiranjeevi to take the political plunge

Megastar Chiranjeevi , who dominated the Telugu film world for three decades, is all set to take the political plunge.

According to sources close to the living legend, Chiru, as he is known among friends, will launch his own political party in the New Year.

Speculation has been rife over the years that Chiranjeevi will form a party of his own. But until now, the mega star had been holding himself back.

Now, says the grapevine, Chiranjeevi thinks the time is ripe for penning the political script.

If and when he forms his own party, it is sure to change the dynamics of Andhra Pradesh politics.

Reports also say that Chiru was under pressure from his fans and people close to him to don the political robes for quite some time.

Incidentally, Chiru's decision to form a party comes a year before the next assembly elections.

The party, sources close to the actor say, will bring the backward classes on a single platform and challenge the domination of two major castes Reddys and Kammas in State politics.

While the Reddys dominate the Congress, Kammas form the backbone of the Telugu Desam.

Chiranjeevi, who belongs to the backward Kapu community, has already had one success: a secretary of the AP Congress has already signalled his intent to join the Chiranjeevi outfit as and when it is formed.

That shows which way the wind is blowing and the kind of response the Chiranjeevi party will evoke from the state's people.

Chiranjeevi will be the second Telugu hero to enter politics, the first being NT Rama Rao who formed Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 1982 after an illustrious film career spanning 50 years.

One thing can be said with certainty. Andhra politics will never be the same again with the entry of Chiranjeevi into the political arena.
