This year’s Lakme India Fashion Week began on Tuesday in New Delhi, amid expectations and assurance that the event is going to be bigger and better this time.
For these seven days every year, the city becomes the hub of fashion industry in India. People have flown in from Mumbai, Chennai and other major cities to be part of the event that will show designs from 57 designers in 35 shows held over a period of a week till May third.
In fact, the celebrations began two days before the event when designer Kavita Bhartiya organized a preview of her collection on Sunday at F Bar and Lounge. Later that night, there was another party held by Seagrams India at Agni at The Park.
And now that the even is officially on Tuesday, the city seems to have been swept with the high tide of glamour. Four hundred buyers including New York’s Saks Fifth Avenue and London’s Browns are in the city to attend the event.
Also present at the event are around 350 mediapersons from India and abroad. Among them are Colin McDowell from ‘The Times’ of London (Colin has written biography of Christian Dior’s John Galliano) and there are people from Canadian and Singapore Television and journalists from South Asian newspapers.
With gloss and glamour being the highlight of the capital in the coming week, there also speculations that Delhi will be made a permanent venue for LIFW.
