Indian fashion making its presence in the west

The world is waking up to the works of Indian fashion designers. A good number of these designers are selling at famous fashion outlets like Selfridges and Liberty.

Tarun Tahiliani , Aki Narula and Sabyasachi Mukherjee are already names to reckon with at Selfridges. And now two more Indian designers – Mumbai-based Monisha Jaising and duo Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla – have entered the Harrods at Knightbridge in London. This is the first time Harrods will be selling clothes by Indian designers.

What happened was that Mrs. Al Fayad (whose husband Mohammad Al Fayad owns Harrods) came to the store Beauchamps place and picked outfits by Abu-Khosla. These outfits were particularly admired by Mr. Al Fayad, who offered the Indian designer duo a place in the designer-eveningwear section at Harrods.

Abu-Khosla believe that there has been better appreciation of Indian fashion in the west in the recent years. Their opinion is shared by the 29-year-old designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee , who says that the international fashion world is beginning to sit up and take notice of India's age-old textiles and fabrics for a new fashion sensibility.

Mukherjee has just returned from a successful debut at the Milan fashion week. At Milan, he was part of the pret-a-porter segment - his collection priced between $40 and $800 apiece.

His collection had a range of delicately stained and printed skirts, dresses and jackets at the event. The collection was very bohemian chic, full of distressed embroidery and detailing like tin buttons covered with a layer-flap of woven clothe.

Even the collection by Armani at the Milan fashion week carried influences of Indian fashion. Armani models sashayed whites and khakis reminiscent of the colonial Raj complete with jodhpurs and horse riding jackets in the spring/summer 2005 Emporio collection.

There were swishing silks, creating visions of nautch girls of a different era, notes on the collection had the Emporio Armani logo inside a lotus flower and a typeface resembling the Indian Devnagri script.
