Neha Kapur walks the ramp in Delhi

Indian ethnicity, Pushkar and Cleopatra on the ramp marked the opening of the maiden Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week in New Delhi on Wednesday, which also saw Miss India Universe, Neha Kapur , walk the ramp.

Giving a colourful start to the second fashion week of India, Niki Mahajan, showcased her autumn/winter collection, which had the mela in Pushkar as its theme.

Her style was sophisticated and chic with a blend of creativity in the cuts of the skirts and quilted jackets, which presented the flavour of Rajasthan on the ramp.

Australian actress, Tanya Zeta, of Salaam Namaste fame played Cleopatra, the queen of eternal beauty, and walked down the ramp in a Pria Kataria Puri outfit. Inspiration from the Egyptian and Turkish culture was in full evidence in Pria's collection of turquoise, gold, pearly porcelain and emerald dresses.

"It is very much Egyptian and meant for the Middle-East and European buyers. I am sure they will like the dresses and the boots which have a lot of embellishments," Puri said, adding she was looking at doubling her business through the fashion week.

The opening day of the fashion week also saw Miss India Universe, Neha, strutting down the ramp in creations by Namrata Joshipura and Malini Ramani. Also wearing the desingers' creations were super models like Nethra Ranganathan, Fleur Xaviers, Diandra Soares and Sonalika.

Joshipura's collection, Nervous Splendor, had a range of earthy colours and tones of frosty grey, ivory and wine depicting uncertainty and excitement. The collection was a tribute to "intelligent, self assured and most of all complex women," she said.

Empire jackets, straight dresses and full skirts gave Joshipura's collections a "contemporary" look, while her unusual fabric combinations, such as tweed with silk, made the exhibition "introspective and gregarious."

Diametrically opposite to Joshipura was Malini Ramani's clothes in bright hues of pink, green, yellow and orange in tandem with her theme of a beach party theme.
